ROME 26.09: Updates vs. Install Images
OpenMandriva published refreshed ROME 26.09 installation images on October 1. Google News lists Linuxiac coverage. The official announcement identifies a rolling-release image refresh and notes that existing users had already received updates. The image date is not necessarily the first repository availability date of each package.
Contents
Record three version states
Separate three states in a rolling distribution: installation-media contents, current repository versions and versions actually installed on a machine. They can differ. A bug report saying only that it used 26.09 is insufficient; record installation origin and actual package versions.
Checking optimization claims
The announcement includes compiler and packaging optimization work, but that does not establish faster execution for your application. Workload, hardware, inputs and build options can make timing comparisons unfair. Record cold startup, sustained operation and resource use separately rather than selecting a single fastest run.
Packages versus complete images
Known issues include some virtual-machine boot configurations and a COSMIC installation image not released alongside the others. A desktop component in a repository does not mean every matching installation image is available. Generic screenshots cannot replace acceptance of the target combination.
Specify the target combination
Before testing, list the required desktop, graphics session and critical applications, then check release notes. Keep version records and a recoverable existing system while testing independently. This article installs no ROME system and validates no hardware compatibility; it interprets release boundaries rather than recommending immediate migration.
Source and publication note
Prepared and published on October 13 after the planned October 12 slot; the article date preserves that slot. This is an interpretation of an earlier announcement, not a claim that the event happened today.
